MATADOR ATHLETICS NEWSLETTER
The Class of 2010 will take with them many memories of their high school career at Memorial Day School.....some of those are good, and I am sure, some of them are not as good. Every student goes through many highs and lows while they "find themselves" during their high school years, so not having all good memories is nothing unusual. BUT, this class takes with them something that none of their peers, can ever compare or talk about. The Class of 2010 takes with them the knowledge that their school....their team, can always have bragging rights regarding being the ONLY Savannah school to win a State Football Championship for over 25 years, AND THEN.....do it again winning an unprecedented BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
We will miss all of our graduates, but I will always hold a very special place in my heart for four who have given our athletic programs all they had.
REBEKAH HILL has been a Memoiral Day Student for far more years than I would admit. Early on, we knew we had a special young lady and she has proven that year after year. Rebekah leaves us earning 5 varsity letters in Basketball. She also takes with her, letters for Softball, Volleyball, Track and Cheerleading. She has been our female Athlete of the Year for the past three years and is the leader of any team she participates on. Far more than her accomplishiments in athletics, Rebekah is a consistent Headmaster's List winner a HOPE Scholarship recipient and was the Class of 2010 Co-Salutatorian.
A. J. WELCH has the incredible record of starting all 47 football games over his 4 year career at Memorial. A.J. didn't stop at football - he also played at the varsity lever in basketball, baseball, and track for 4 years graduating with an incredible 16 Varsity Letters in his 4 years at Memorial. All of this is accomplished by A. J. while maintaining a "B" or better average. We wiill all get a chance to see A.J. star at the next level as he signed to play for Savannah State University.
TAYLOR THOMPSON is another of our versitile student-athletes and would have racked up some records for himself had he not suffered a torn ACL two years ago. But that injury is a credit to Taylor because not only did he work his way back...but he worked his way back to be bigger, faster and stronger. For four years, Taylor Thompson played in the shadow of his brother's acoomplishments at Memorial, but at the end of the season - Taylor established his own legacy. Taylor is another athlete that will continue his play at Savannah State University
SAL SANCHEZ is perhaps the easiest for many other student-athletes to relate to. Sal played football way beyond his size and as quarterback, is the guy that took the hits and kept ticking. Sal is another "life-long" student at Memorial who has played four years of varsity football while also earning letters in Basketball and Track. Sal leaves MDS with a 5th varsity letter for baseball and moves on to play baseball at East Georgia College. In the classroom, Sal was a leader as well maintaining close to a straight "A" average.
These are the students that took the leadership role in anything that they did whether it is being Yearbook Editor, Team Captain, Student Council, etc.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF YOU.
I will miss you dearly.
